ALTITUDE AT NAKOMA AWARDED

Nakoma Resort’s Recreation Center Recognized for Design

The basecamp to the Lost Sierra is Nakoma, and the heart of Nakoma is Altitude.

At 12,000+ square feet, Altitude, the resort’s luxe family activity center, is gathering awards for its soaring ceilings, light-filled spaces and functionality years after its debut in 2017. As we’ve known from Altitude’s inception on the drafting table, the building is more than just a collection of walls, windows and a roof — it is a magnificent community hub.

Now that sentiment is being celebrated with Altitude garnering Tahoe Quarterly Magazine’s Commercial Design Award. As the magazine article showcasing the award points out, the principals of Cathexes, the architects of Altitude, envisioned a “grand lobby and atrium with everything opening to the primary focal element of the pool deck and then the scenic views beyond that.”

Indeed, Nakoma embraces the great outdoors while believing that luxury and comfort complement the adventure lifestyle. Altitude reflects that balance. By combining a palette of natural Sierra materials on Altitude’s exterior with walls of windows and glass to flood the interior with sunlight, the building is an example of design at its highest form — a blend of beauty, function and harmony with the Lost Sierra’s natural surroundings.

THE WRIGHT INFLUENCE

Truckee nor Lake Tahoe can boast a Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece, which makes the discovery of one of his works atop a hill in the Sierra a surprise. But as Cathexes designers note, the influence of Nakoma’s own Wright-designed Lodge was both a start point and end point for the design cues of Altitude. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Nakoma Lodge is “amazing and beautiful, certainly,” said Cathexes’ Jeremy Packer, but it sprang from a different place in a different era. Therefore, Altitude salutes but doesn’t mimic the Wright Lodge, especially in what it offers to today’s families.

ALTITUDE AMENITIES

Altitude was constructed to be the four-seasons center for families both living at and visiting Nakoma. It is on par with recreation facilities at Tahoe Donner and Martis Camp real estate developments in Truckee as well as facilities serving Clear Creek real estate in Carson City, Nevada.

At Altitude, parents can linger at The Middle Fork Bistro + Bar while kids explore the many offerings just feet away. From its indoor climbing gym and heated outdoor pool to spacious fitness center and yoga room, Altitude offers something for everyone — even teens and toddlers. Altitude includes the Apex Room with video games and analog fun for older kids and a children’s center plus a movie theater for the very young to the young at heart.

Altitude is open to Nakoma Members and guests of the Inn at Nakoma. Discover all that Altitude has to offer here!
