Beyond the beauty of living at Nakoma itself, the landscape that makes up our big backyard is the icing on the Nakoma Life cake. Mountain peaks, vast pine forests and, of course, the many gorgeous alpine lakes that are accessible by foot, bike or car.
Choosing the Nakoma Life means you likely love to opt outside. So the most difficult decision you’ll have to make some days is, “Which lake will I hike to or swim in today?”
To help the decision-making process, let’s take a tour of the Lost Sierra lakes in Nakoma’s backyard. This is a peek at the choices and not a definitive guide, but it will give you an idea of what makes living the Nakoma Life so special.
Bear-Round-Silver-Long Lakes: This hike is often called the Bear Lakes Loop and is located in the Lakes Basin Recreation Area off Gold Lake Highway about 15 minutes from Nakoma. The hike skirts four crystal clear lakes that invite a picnic or swim or both. The basic loop is just a few miles, but there are offshoots to Round Lake and Silver Lake if you want to extend the hike and increase your lake intake. Why is it called “Bear Lakes Loop”? Well, you’ll pass Big Bear, Little Bear, and Cub Lakes. With only a 350’ elevation gain, it’s a perfect hike for the whole family.
Sardine Lakes: With the jagged Matterhorn peaks of the Sierra Buttes as the backdrop, Sardine Lake is worth a visit just for the vista. Whether you paddle or fish, Lower Sardine is ideal, and for swimming it’s a short hike up to Upper Sardine. You can also make it a twofer by paddling across Lower Sardine lake and then hike up to Upper Sardine. Top it all off with a paddle back to Sardine Lakes Resort for a cocktail. If you have small kids in tow, head to nearby Sand Pond, which is named for its sandy bottom and gradual depth — making it an ideal spot for a splash.
